A new custom home on a desert lot in Tucson needed its water and electrical service brought in from the road. The run was long: more than 500 linear feet of trench from the connection points to the house, following the staked route across native desert and around the saguaros that were staying.
G & J cut the trench with an excavator to the depths the utility installers and the inspector required, keeping the bottom clean and on grade so the water line would hold fall and the electrical conduit could be bedded properly. Spoils were windrowed alongside the trench for backfill once the lines were in and inspected.
Scope
- Utility locates and route staking before any digging
- 500+ linear feet of trench for the domestic water line and electrical service conductors
- Depth and width set to the installer and code requirements for each utility
- Spoils kept beside the trench for bedding, shading and backfill
- Trench left open, clean and safe for the plumber and electrician to install and for inspection
Challenges
Long runs across undisturbed desert mean rock, caliche layers and roots in the trench line. The route had to work around protected saguaros and other native plants that were staying, and the bottom of a 500-foot trench still has to hold grade end to end so the water line drains correctly.
Outcome
