Excavation for residential and commercial projects
Excavation is the first thing that has to be right on a job site. Footings that are cut to the wrong depth, a pad that is off grade, or a site cut that ignores drainage will cost the trades that follow. G & J Excavating handles the dig phase for homeowners, builders, developers and general contractors across Tucson and Southern Arizona, working from your plans and staking to the elevations and tolerances the project calls for.
What our excavation work includes
- Foundation excavation for stem walls, footings, monolithic slabs and basements, cut to plan depth with over-excavation where the soils report requires it.
- Site cuts and fills to bring a lot to design grade, including balancing material on site where the plan allows.
- Building pads for homes, garages, casitas, shops and commercial buildings, built up in compacted lifts.
- Rough excavation for mass earth moving, detention basins and large site work.
- Precision excavation around existing structures, utilities and property lines where there is little room for error.
- Dirt removal and haul-off of spoils, and import of fill or select material when the site needs it.
Residential excavation
On a residential lot the excavation scope usually combines several of the items above: clearing the footprint, cutting the pad, digging footings, and hauling off what cannot be used on site. We coordinate with the builder or homeowner on staking, access, where spoils can be stockpiled and how the finished pad will drain. Custom home sites in the foothills and on larger desert lots often add caliche, rock and slope to the equation, and we plan the equipment and approach around what the site actually presents.
Commercial excavation
Commercial site work runs on a schedule with other trades waiting. We handle building pad excavation, mass grading cuts, footing and grade-beam excavation, and earthwork for parking, drainage and access. We work from civil drawings and coordinate with the general contractor’s superintendent so the excavation phase hands off cleanly to concrete, utilities and paving.
What to expect
- Site walk and estimate. We review plans, look at access and soils, and give you a written scope and price.
- Locates and layout. Utility locates are called in before any digging, and we work from surveyed staking or plan dimensions as agreed.
- Excavation. The dig is done to plan elevations, with spoils handled as agreed: stockpiled, spread or hauled off.
- Handoff. The site is left ready for the next trade, with the pad or excavation ready for inspection where one is required.
Excavation is often paired with grading, site preparation and utility trenching, and we can scope those together so one crew handles the sequence.
